The warm cabin checklist for raw coastal mornings

Small heat, warm feet, good sheets and the alarms that belong next to any wood stove.

Postcards of products from this story

Even in summer, a morning by the water can start cold and damp. In winter, keeping a cabin cozy is a daily job. Here is our short list for staying warm and safe without overhauling the whole house.

Warm the room you are in

Instead of heating every corner, a compact heater can take the chill off a mudroom, bathroom or home office. Keep it three feet from anything that can burn, and never leave it running unattended.

Start with warm feet

Cold feet make the whole body feel cold. A heated foot massager after a day outside is a small luxury that feels like a big one.

Sleep well in any season

Bright summer nights and stuffy winter rooms both make it hard to sleep. Breathable cotton sheets help you stay comfortable either way.

Never skip the alarms

Wood stoves, propane and oil heat are common on the Kenai Peninsula, which makes smoke and carbon monoxide alarms essential. Put one on every level and near sleeping areas, test them monthly, and keep a fire blanket near the kitchen.

Quick monthly routine: press the test button on each alarm, check the fire blanket is on its hook, and clear the space around any heater.
